Who are we?

Kumbuka Afrika is a nonprofit, development organization working in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. Our Vision is an Africa where resilient communities develop strategic partenerships for their prosperity. Founded in 2023 we envisaged and created Kumbuka Afrika through shared decades of experience in equitable access to, and responsible management of, natural resources. We are a wholly local, globally experienced, team committed to international best practices from the field to the board room, to the political area.

Our role in ITSCI

Our primary focus is the implementation of ITSCI, the International Tin Supply Chain Initiative. ITSCI works in partenership with Government, industry and civil society to achieve avoidance of conflict financing, human rights abuses, or other risks such as bribery in mineral supply chains. ITSCI’s key reference is the OECD Due Diligence Guidance.

System Implementation

Carrying out baseline studies to identify credible, conflict-free mines which can join the system. Distributing materials including tags and logbooks to our Government parteners.

Oversight & Monitoring

Monitoring and collecting materials and information for traceability records. Reporting and investigating incidents of corruption, security concerns, human rights abuses, or failures of due diligence. Monitoring sites for credibility of production and any changes in operating status.

Stakeholder Support

Training our Government counterparts, company staff, and others, on their responsibilities in relation to traceability and due diligence. Supporting multistakeholder meetings to monitor the implementation of ITSCI and the status of due diligence efforts.

Capacity Building

Building the capacity of all stakeholders to play an informed and active role in ensuring good governance of the mineral sector. This includes strengthening their understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the sector.

What we do

We work to bring innovative solutions to the governance of natural resources in Africa, to strengthen the capacities of local communities, and to catalyse and support the transformation of resources into shared wealth.
Our Mission is to facilitate the connection between public, private, and local community stakeholders by providing holistic and adapted technical assistance that positively impacts their organizational, institutional, and economic capacities.

How is Kumbuka Afrika funded?

Kumbuka Afrika is a not-for-profit organization. We are funded by our parteners when we undertake projects with them. Our projects pay for our field activities and operating costs but we do not have any commercial interests or shareholdings in any private sector operations.
How does Kumbuka Afrika ensure independence with corporate and government parteners?

Kumbuka Afrika is an NGO (or ASBL – Association Sans But Lucrative). Under DRC Law N° 004/2001, Article 40, the State may not interfere in the running of an NGO. Kumbuka Afrika has organisational policies on issues such as corruption with training provided to all staff and parteners, as well as reporting and resolution mechanisms in place. ITSCI has had a whistle-blowing mechanism in place for many years and that will continue to operate with third party observers.
Does Kumbuka Afrika work outside the Great Lakes Region?

The Kumbuka Afrika team members have extensive international experience across Africa. At present, our remit is focused on the Great Lakes Region but we plan to extend to other countries where our expertise can be of use. We always welcome approaches from potential parteners.
