  • How is Kumbuka Afrika funded?
Kumbuka Afrika is a not-for-profit organization. We are funded by our partners when we undertake projects with them. Our projects pay for our field activities and operating costs but we do not have any commercial interests or shareholdings in any private sector operations.
  • How does Kumbuka Afrika ensure independence with corporate and government partners?
Kumbuka Afrika is an NGO (or ASBL – Association Sans But Lucrative). Under DRC Law N° 004/2001, Article 40, the State may not interfere in the running of an NGO. Kumbuka Afrika has organisational policies on issues such as corruption with training provided to all staff and partners, as well as reporting and resolution mechanisms in place. ITSCI has had a whistle-blowing mechanism in place for many years and that will continue to operate with third party observers.
  • Does Kumbuka Afrika work outside the Great Lakes Region?
The Kumbuka Afrika team members have extensive international experience across Africa. At present, our remit is focused on the Great Lakes Region but we plan to extend to other countries where our expertise can be of use. We always welcome approaches from potential partners.
  • What is the relationship between Kumbuka Afrika, Pact, and ITSCI?
Many of the team members of Kumbuka Afrika previously worked for the US-based NGO, Pact, which was the implementing partner for ITSCI for over ten years. In 2023, Kumbuka Afrika was set up and took over the role of ITSCI implementation. This was a mutual decision in keeping with all partners’ strategies. Local management was always an objective for ITSCI. Pact, as a capacity building organisation, was equally committed to transitioning projects and activities to local partners. Both organisations had a shared pride in what they achieved together, and it was with confidence and optimism that the role transitioned to the wholly local, new organisation, Kumbuka Afrika.
  • Does Kumbuka Afrika work with other types of minerals supply chains outside of the 3Ts (tin, tantalum and tungsten)?
At present, we work exclusively on the 3Ts however our team members have extensive experience of working in the following mineral supply chains (this list is not exhaustive): copper, cobalt, gold, diamonds, coloured gemstones, construction/quarry materials
